  • Death of A Micro Center

    The Micro Center computer store located in Santa Clara, CA, USA closed recently :



    I liked Micro Center. I have liked Micro Center ever since I first visited their Denver, CO location 10 years ago. I would sometimes drive an hour in each direction just to visit that shop. I was excited to see that they had a location in the Bay Area when I moved here a few years ago (despite the preponderance of Fry’s stores).

    Now this location is gone. I wonder how much of the “we couldn’t come to favorable terms on a lease” was true (vs. an excuse to close a retail store at a time when more business is moving online, particularly in the heart of Silicon Valley). But that’s not what I wanted to discuss. I came here to discuss…

    The Micro Center Window Logos

    The craziest part about shopping the Santa Clara Micro Center location was the logos they displayed on the window outside. Every time I saw it, it made me sentimental for a time when some of these logos were current, or when some of these companies were still in business. Some of the logos on their front window were for companies I’ve never heard of. It reminds me of the nearby 7-11 convenience stores when I was growing up– their walls were decorated with people sporting embarrassingly 1970s styles long after the 1970s had transpired.

    I thought I would record what those front window logos were and try to pinpoint when the store launched exactly (assuming the logos have been their since the initial opening and never changed).

    Here we have Lotus, Hewlett Packard/HP, Corel, Fuji, Power Macintosh, NEC, and Fujitsu. Lotus was purchased by IBM in 1995 and still seems to be maintained as a separate brand. The Power Macintosh was introduced as a brand in 1994. Corel’s logo has seen a few mutations over the years but I don’t know when this one fell out of favor.

    Fuji (vs. Fujitsu) appears to refer to Fujifilm, though this logo is also obsolete.

    Hayes– I specifically remember reading the Slashdot post accouncing that Hayes is dead (followed by many comments reminiscing about the Hayes command set). Here is the post, from early 1999.

    From Googling, it doesn’t appear IBM still has a presence in the consumer computing space (though they do have something pertaining to software for consumer products). Then there’s the good old rainbow Apple logo, something that went away in 1997. I suspect 1997 was also the last hurrah of the name ‘Macintosh’ (though I remember mistakenly referring to Apple computer products as Macintoshes well into the mid-2000s and inadvertently angering some Apple enthusiasts).

    As for the next segment, obviously, both Sony and Toshiba are still very much alive. Iomega was acquired by EMC in 2008 but is still maintained as a separate brand. USRobotics is still around and making — what else ? — 56K modems (and their current logo is slightly different than the one seen here).

    Targus seems to be a case maker (“Leading Provider of Cases, Bags and Accessories for Laptops and Tablets”). I wonder if that’s just their current business or if they had more areas long ago ? It seems strange that they would get brand billing like this.

    Finally, searching for information about Practical Peripherals only produces sites about how they’re long dead (like this history lesson). It’s unclear when they died.

    The interior of this store was also decorated with more technology company logos near the ceiling (I didn’t really register that fact until I had visited many times). Regrettably, I now won’t be able to see how up to date those logos were.

    Based on the data points above, it’s safe to conclude that the store opened between 1995 or 1996 (again, assuming the logos were placed at opening and never changed).

    Epilogue

    Here’s one more curious item still visible from the outside :



    “See the world’s fastest PC !” Featuring an Intel Core 2 Extreme ? That CPU dates back to 2007 and was succeeded by Nehalem in late 2008. So even that sign, which is presumably easier and cleaner to replace than the window logos, was absurdly out of date.

    The Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) is one of many regulations established to address these concerns. PSD2 is a European Union (EU) business initiative to offer smooth payment experiences while helping customers feel safe from online threats. 

    In this post, learn what PSD2 includes, how it improves security for online payments, and how Matomo supports banks and financial institutions with PSD2 compliance.

    What is PSD2 ? 

    PSD2 is an EU directive that aims to improve the security of electronic payments across the EU. It enforces strong customer authentication and allows third-party access to consumer accounts with explicit consent. 

    Its main objectives are :

    • Encouraging innovation by allowing third-party providers access to banking data.

    Rationale behind PSD2 

    PSD2’s primary purpose is to engineer a more integrated and efficient European payment market without compromising the security of online transactions. 

    The original directive aimed to standardise payment services across EU member states, but as technology evolved, an updated version was needed.

    PSD2 is mandatory for various entities within the European Economic Area (EEA), like :

    • Banks and credit institutions
    • Electronic money institutions or digital banks like Revolut
    • Card issuing and acquiring institutions
    • Fintech companies
    • Multi-national organisations operating in the EU

    PSD2 implementation timeline

    With several important milestones, PSD2 has reshaped how payment services work in Europe. Here’s a closer look at the pivotal events that paved the way for its launch.

    • 2002 : The banking industry creates the European Payments Council (EC), which drives the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) initiative to include non-cash payment instruments across European regions. 
    • 2007 : PSD1 goes into effect.
    • 2013 : EC proposes PSD2 to include protocols for upcoming payment services.
    • 2015 : The Council of European Union passes PSD2 and gives member states two years to incorporate it.
    • 2018 : PSD2 goes into effect. 
    • 2019 : The final deadline for all companies within the EU to comply with PSD2’s regulations and rules for strong customer authentication. 

    PSD2 : Key components 

    PSD2 introduces several key components. Let’s take a look at each one.

    Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

    The Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) under PSD2 outline specific requirements for SCA. 

    SCA requires multi-factor authentication for online transactions. When customers make a payment online, they need to verify their identity using at least two of the three following elements :

    • Knowledge : Something they know (like a password, a code or a secret answer)
    • Possession : Something they have (like their phone or card)
    • Inherence : Something they are (like biometrics — fingerprints or facial features)

    Before SCA, banks verified an individual’s identity only using a password. This dual verification allows only authorised users to complete transactions. SCA implementation reduces fraud and increases the security of electronic payments.

    SCA implementation varies for different payment methods. Debit and credit cards use the 3D Secure (3DS) protocol. E-wallets and other local payment measures often have their own SCA-compliant steps. 

    3DS is an extra step to authenticate a customer’s identity. Most European debit and credit card companies implement it. Also, in case of fraudulent chargebacks, the issuing bank becomes liable due to 3DS, not the business. 

    However, in SCA, certain transactions are exempt : 

    • Low-risk transactions : A transaction by an issuer or an acquirer whose fraud level is below a specific threshold. If the acquirer feels that a transaction is low risk, they can request to skip SCA. 
    • Low-value transactions : Transactions under €30.
    • Trusted beneficiaries : Trusted merchants customers choose to safelist.
    • Recurring payments : Recurring transactions for a fixed amount are exempt from SCA after the first transaction.

    Third-party payment service providers (TPPs) framework

    TPPs are entities authorised to access customer banking data and initiate payments. There are three types of TPPs :

    Account Information Service Providers (AISPs)

    AISPs are services that can view customers’ account details, but only with their permission. For example, a budgeting app might use AISP services to gather transaction data from a user’s bank account, helping them monitor expenses and oversee finances. 

    Payment Initiation Service Providers (PISPs)

    PISPs enable clients to initiate payments directly from their bank accounts, bypassing the need for conventional payment options such as debit or credit cards. After the customer makes a payment, PISPs immediately contact the merchant to ensure the user can access the online services or products they bought. 

    Card-Based Payment Instruments (CBPII)

    CBPIIs refer to services that issue payment cards linked to customer accounts. 

    Requirements for TPPs

    To operate effectively under PSD2, TPPs must meet several requirements :

    Consumer consent : Customers must explicitly authorise TPPs to retrieve their financial data. This way, users can control who can view their information and for what purpose.

    Security compliance : TPPs must follow SCA and secure communication guidelines to protect users from fraud and unauthorised access.

    API availability : Banks must make their Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) accessible and allow TPPs to connect securely with the bank’s systems. This availability helps in easy integration and lets TPPs access essential data. 

    Consumer protection methods

    PSD2 implements various consumer protection measures to increase trust and transparency between consumers and financial institutions. Here’s a closer look at some of these key methods :

    • Prohibition of unjustified fees : PSD2 requires banks to clearly communicate any additional charges or fees for international transfers or account maintenance. This ensures consumers are fully aware of the actual costs and charges.
    • Timely complaint resolution : PSD2 mandates that payment service providers (PSPs) have a straightforward complaint procedure. If a customer faces any problems, the provider must respond within 15 business days. This requirement encourages consumers to engage more confidently with financial services.
    • Refund in case of unauthorised payment : Customers are entitled to a full refund for payments made without their consent.
    • Surcharge ban : Additional charges on credit and debit card payments aren’t allowed. Businesses can’t impose extra fees on these payment methods, which increases customers’ purchasing power.

    Introducing new players in the financial ecosystem, such as AISPs and PISPs, creates competition. Banks must adapt their services to stay competitive while managing compliance costs.

    PSD2 aims to protect customers but the stronger authentication requirements can make banking less convenient. Banks must balance security with user experience. Focused time, effort and continuous monitoring are needed for businesses to stay compliant and competitive.

    With your goals in mind, the next step is to dive into your website analytics and identify pages that need improvement.

    Consider the following conversion metrics when analysing pages :

    • Conversion rate
    • Average time on page
    • Average order value
    • Click-through rate

    Ensure you’re analysing metrics aligning with the goals you set in step one. Average order value could be a great metric to track if you want to reduce cart abandonments, for example, but it’s unsuitable to get more email subscribers.

    3. Research the user experience

    Next, you’ll want to gather user experience data to better understand how potential customers use your website and why they aren’t converting as often as you’d like. 

    You can use several tools for user behaviour analysis, but we recommend heatmaps and session recordings.

    Heatmaps visually represent how users click, move and scroll your website. It will show where visitors place their attention and which page elements are ignored.

    Session recordings capture the actions users take as they browse your website. They let you watch a video playback of how visitors behave, capturing clicks and scrolls so you can see each visitor’s steps in order.

    4. Analyse your forms

    Whether your forms are too confusing or too long, there are plenty of reasons for users to abandon your forms.

    5. Analyse your conversion funnel

    Next, analyse the conversion funnel to see if there’s an obvious bottleneck or several pages where visitors abandon your desired action. Common conversion abandonment points are shopping carts and forms.

    For example, you could find there is a drop-off in conversions between checking out and making a purchase or between booking a demo and signing up for a subscription. Understanding where these drop-offs occur lets you dig deeper and make targeted improvements.

    Don’t worry if you’ve got a very long funnel. Start at the bottom and work backward. Problems with the pages at the very end of your funnel tasked with converting customers (landing pages, checkout pages, etc.) will have the biggest impact on your conversion rate. So, it makes sense to start there. 

    6. Analyse campaigns and traffic sources (marketing attribution)

    It’s now time to analyse traffic quality to ensure you’re powering your conversion optimisation efforts with the best traffic possible. 

    This can also help you find your best customers so you can focus on acquiring more of them and tailoring your optimisation efforts to their preferences. 

    Run a marketing attribution report to see which traffic sources generate the most conversions and have the highest conversion rates.

    Using marketing attribution is crucial here because it gives a fuller picture of how customers move through their journey, recognising the impact of various touchpoints in making a decision, unlike last-click attribution, which only credits the final touchpoint before a conversion.

    7. Use surveys and other qualitative data sources

    Increase the amount of qualitative data you have access to by speaking directly to customers. Surveys, interviews and other user feedback methods add depth and context to your user behaviour research.

    Sure, you aren’t getting feedback from hundreds of customers like you do with heatmaps or session recordings, but the information can sometimes be much richer. Users will often tell you outright why they didn’t take a specific action in a survey response (or what convinced them to convert).

    8. Develop a conversion hypothesis

    9. Run A/B tests

    Now, it’s time to put your theory into practice by running an A/B test.

    Create an experiment using a platform like Matomo that creates two different versions of your page : the original and one with the change you mentioned in your hypothesis. 

    There’s no set time for you to run an A/B test. Just keep running it until the outcome is statistically significant. This is something your A/B testing platform should do automatically. 

    A statistically significant result means it would be very unlikely the outcome doesn’t happen in the long term.

    As you can see in the image above, the wide header variation has significantly outperformed both the original and the other variation. So we can be pretty confident about making the change permanent.

    10. Monitor and iterate

    You need to develop a culture of continuous improvement to succeed with conversion rate optimisation. That means constantly monitoring your conversion goals and running tests to improve your metrics. 

    While you don’t need to run a conversion audit every month, you should run audits regularly throughout the year.
