Further Dreamcast Hacking
3 février 2011, par Multimedia Mike — Sega DreamcastI’m still haunted by Sega Dreamcast programming, specifically the fact that I used to be able to execute custom programs on the thing (roughly 8-10 years ago) and now I cannot. I’m going to compose a post to describe my current adventures on this front. There are 3 approaches I have been using : Raw, Kallistios, and the almighty Linux.
Raw
What I refer to as "raw" is an assortment of programs that lived in a small number of source files (sometimes just one ASM file) and could be compiled with the most basic SH-4 toolchain. The advantage here is that there aren’t many moving parts and not many things that can possibly go wrong, so it provides a good functional baseline.One of the original Dreamcast hackers was Marcus Comstedt, who still has his original DC material hosted at the reasonably easy-to-remember URL mc.pp.se/dc. I can get some of these simple demos to work, but not others.
I also successfully assembled and ran a pair of 256-byte (!!) demos from this old DC scene page.
KallistiOS
KallistiOS (or just KOS) was a real-time OS developed for the DC and was popular among the DC homebrew community. All the programming I did back in the day was based around KOS. Now I can’t get any of it to work. More specifically, KOS can’t seem to make it past a certain point in its system initialization.The Linux Option
I was never that excited about running Linux on my Dreamcast. For some hackers, running Linux on a given piece of consumer electronics is the highest attainable goal. Back in the day, I looked at it from a much more pragmatic perspective— I didn’t see much use in running Linux on the DC, not as much as running KOS which was developed to be a much more appropriate fit.However, I was able to burn a CD-R of an old binary image of Linux 2.4.5 compiled for the Dreamcast and boot it some months ago. So I at least have a feeling that this should work. I have never cross-compiled a kernel of my own (though I have compiled many, many x86 kernels in my time, so I’m not a total n00b in this regard). I figured this might be a good time to start.
The first item that worries me is getting a functional cross-compiling toolchain. Fortunately, a little digging in the Linux kernel documentation pointed me in the direction of a bunch of ready-made toolchains hosted at kernel.org. So I grabbed one of the SH toolchains (gcc-4.3.3-nolibc) and got rolling.
I’m well familiar with the cycle of
'make menuconfig'
in order to pick configuration options, and then'make'
to build a kernel (or usually'make zImage'
or'make bzImage'
to create compressed images). For cross compiling, the primary difference seems to be editing the root Makefile in the Linux source code tree (I’m using 2.6.37, the latest stable as of this writing) and setting a value for the CROSS_COMPILE variable. Then, run'make menuconfig'
followed by'make'
as normal.The Linux 2.6 series is supposed to support a range of Renesas (formerly Hitachi) SH processors and board configurations. This includes reasonable defaults for the Sega Dreamcast hardware. I got it all compiling except for a series of .S files. Linus Torvalds once helped me debug a program I work on so I thought I’d see if there was something I could help debug here.
The first issue was with ASM statements of a form similar to :
mov #0xffffffe0, r1
Now, the DC’s SH-4 is a RISC CPU. A lot of RISC architectures adopt a fixed instruction size of 32 bits. You can’t encode an entire 32-bit immediate value inside of a 32-bit instruction (there would be no room for the instruction encoding). Further, the SH series encoded instructions with a mere 16 bits. The move immediate data instruction only allows for an 8-bit, sign-extended value.
I decided that the above statement is equivalent to :
mov #-32, r1
I’ll give this statement the benefit of the doubt that it used to work with the gcc toolchain somewhere along the line. I assume that the assembler is supposed to know enough to substitute the first form with the second.
The next problem is that an ’sti’ instruction shows up in a number of spots. Using Intel x86 conventions, this is a "set interrupt flag" instruction (I remember that the 6502 CPU had the same instruction mnemonic, though its interrupt flag’s operation was opposite that of the x86). The SH-4 reference manual lists no ’sti’ instruction. When it gets to these lines, the assembler complains about immediate move instructions with too large data, like the instructions above. I’m guessing they must be macro’d to something else but I failed to find where. I commented out those lines for the time being. Probably not that smart, but I want to keep this moving for now.
So I got the code to compile into a kernel file called ’vmlinux’. I’ve seen this file many times before but never thought about how to get it to run directly. The process has usually been to compress it and send it over to lilo or grub for loading, as that is the job of the bootloader. I have never even wondered what format the vmlinux file takes until now. It seems that ’vmlinux’ is just a plain old ELF file :

The ’dc-tool’ program that uploads executables to the waiting bootloader on the Dreamcast is perfectly cool accepting ELF files (and S-record files, and raw binary files). After a very lengthy upload process, execution fails (resets the system).
For the sake of comparison, I dusted off that Linux 2.4.5 bootable Dreamcast CD-ROM and directly uploaded the vmlinux file from that disc. That works just fine (until it’s time to go to the next loading phase, i.e., finding a filesystem). Possible issues here could include the commented ’sti’ instructions (could be that they aren’t just decoration). I’m also trying to understand the memory organization— perhaps the bootloader wants the ELF to be based at a different address. Or maybe the kernel and the bootloader don’t like each other in the first place— in this case, I need to study the bootable Linux CD-ROM to see how it’s done.
Optimism
Even though I’m meeting with rather marginal success, this is tremendously educational. I greatly enjoy these exercises if only for the deeper understanding they bring for the lowest-level system details. -
Announcing the first free software Blu-ray encoder
For many years it has been possible to make your own DVDs with free software tools. Over the course of the past decade, DVD creation evolved from the exclusive domain of the media publishing companies to something basically anyone could do on their home computer.
But Blu-ray has yet to get that treatment. Despite the “format war” between Blu-ray and HD DVD ending over two years ago, free software has lagged behind. “Professional” tools for Blu-ray video encoding can cost as much as $100,000 and are often utter garbage. Here are two actual screenshots from real Blu-rays : I wish I was making this up.
But today, things change. Today we take the first step towards a free software Blu-ray creation toolkit.
Thanks to tireless work by Kieran Kunyha, Alex Giladi, Lamont Alston, and the Doom9 crowd, x264 can now produce Blu-ray-compliant video. Extra special thanks to The Criterion Collection for sponsoring the final compliance test to confirm x264′s Blu-ray compliance.
With x264′s powerful compression, as demonstrated by the incredibly popular BD-Rebuilder Blu-ray backup software, it’s quite possible to author Blu-ray disks on DVD9s (dual-layer DVDs) or even DVD5s (single-layer DVDs) with a reasonable level of quality. With a free software encoder and less need for an expensive Blu-ray burner, we are one step closer to putting HD optical media creation in the hands of the everyday user.
To celebrate this achievement, we are making available for download a demo Blu-ray encoded with x264, containing entirely free content !
On this Blu-ray are the Open Movie Project films Big Buck Bunny and Elephant’s Dream, available under a Creative Commons license. Additionally, Microsoft has graciously provided about 6 minutes of lossless HD video and audio (from part of a documentary project) under a very liberal license. This footage rounds out the Blu-ray by adding some difficult live-action content in addition to the relatively compressible CGI footage from the Open Movie Project. Finally, we used this sound sample, available under a Creative Commons license.
You may notice that the Blu-ray image is only just over 2GB. This is intentional ; we have encoded all the content on the disk at appropriate bitrates to be playable from an ordinary 4.7GB DVD. This should make it far easier to burn a copy of the Blu-ray, since Blu-ray burners and writable media are still relatively rare. Most Blu-ray players will treat a DVD containing Blu-ray data as a normal Blu-ray disc. A few, such as the Playstation 3, will not, but you can still play it as a data disc.
Finally, note that (in accordance with the Blu-ray spec) the disc image file uses the UDF 2.5 filesystem, which may be incompatible with some older virtual drive and DVD burning applications. You’ll also need to play it on an actual Blu-ray player if you want to get the menus and such working correctly. If you’re looking to play it on a PC, a free trial of Arcsoft TMT is available here.

What’s left before we have a fully free software Blu-ray creation toolkit ? Audio is already dealt with ; AC3 audio (aka Dolby Digital), the format used in DVD, is still supported by Blu-ray, and there are many free software AC3 encoders. The primary missing application is a free software Blu-ray authoring tool, to combine the video and audio streams to create a Blu-ray file structure with the menus, chapters, and so forth that we have all come to expect. But the hardest part is dealt with : we can now create compatible video and audio streams.
In the meantime, x264 can be used to create streams to be authored using Blu-Print, Scenarist, Encore or other commercial authoring tools.
More detailed documentation on the new Blu-ray support and how to use it can be found in the official commit message. Do keep in mind that you have to export to raw H.264 (not MKV or MP4) or else the buffering information will be slightly incorrect. Finally, also note that the encoding settings given as an example are not a good choice for general-purpose encoding : they are intentionally crippled by Blu-ray restrictions, which will significantly reduce compression for ordinary non-Blu-ray encoding.
In addition to Blu-ray support, the aforementioned commit comes with a lot of fun extras :
x264 now has native variable-framerate ratecontrol, which makes sure your encodes get a correct target bitrate and proper limiting of maximum bitrate even if the duration of every frame is different and the “framerate” is completely unknown. This helps a lot when encoding from variable-framerate container formats such as FLV and WMV, along with variable-framerate content such as anime.
x264 now supports pulldown (telecine) in much the same fashion as it is handled in MPEG-2. The calling application can pass in flags representing how to display a frame, allowing easy transcoding from MPEG-2 sources with pulldown, such as broadcast television. The x264 commandline app contains some examples of these (such as the common 3:2 pulldown pattern).
x264 now also exports HRD timing information, which is critical for compliant transport stream muxing. There is currently an active project to write a fully DVB-compatible free software TS muxer that will be able to interface with x264 for a seamless free software broadcast system. It will likely also be possible to repurpose this muxer as part of a free software Blu-ray authoring package.
All of this is now available in the latest x264.

Launch Leech and the History of WMV
14 septembre 2010, par Multimedia Mike — GeneralI was combing through my programming archives again and came across an old Perl script called launch-leech.pl. This was a private script I used to maintain for the benefit of myself and a few friends. See, there was this site called Launch.com (URL doesn’t seem to do anything as of this writing but here’s the Wikipedia page). Purchased by Yahoo ! in 2001, Launch still maintained their independent branding. They also carried a lot of music videos, of which I am a huge junkie. launch-leech.pl was the tool I used to download the videos. This was particularly useful since I stubbornly clung to dialup internet access until mid-2004 and it would have been impossible to stream video at any decent quality (though there were 56k streams, so like I said– not possible at any decent quality).
Technically
I followed Launch.com for many years. To be honest, I only “followed” in that I figured out where their “latest videos” URL lived and regularly polled it. Each video had either a 6-, 7-, or 8-digit unique ID that could be plugged into the launch-leech.pl script which would then have a conversation with the relevant servers, determine the correct streaming URL with the highest quality, then download and save the URL by handing it off to an external program (first ASFRecorder, though I later switched to mmsclient).At one point, I even wrote a crawler that compiled an offline database of all the videos, their IDs and their metadata. I never thought of anything interesting to do with it, though.
Windows Media Legacy
During these glory days of leeching, Launch.com streamed using Windows Media. I admit, it’s a bit of a blur now — the site might have used Real or QuickTime, but I was obviously most in tune with the WM side. I remember when I first found the site circa 2000-2001, the videos were in MS MPEG-4v3, and the high quality bitrate was 300 kbits/sec. Eventually, Launch.com would stream WMV7, WMV8, and finally WMV9, with bitrates up to 700 kbits/sec. However, they never broke free of the 320×240 encoding resolution, which was frustrating. When I wasn’t able to notice any substantial difference between 300 and 700 kbits/sec, I felt it might be time to put those extra bits to work on a resolution upgrade.At least they were nice enough to re-encode a number of old videos using better codecs and bitrates with each revision, thus prompting me to scan through the site collecting updated video IDs for download.
Epilogue
I don’t clearly remember when I stopped visiting Launch.com. Video-wise, the web has been a blur of Flash video ever since about 2006. Meanwhile, I spent a lot of time collecting a bunch of music videos in the first half of the decade only to find that pretty much every version of every music video made since the dawn of time is available on demand thanks to YouTube. I have found that this phenomenon manifests in many areas as internet technology marches on.The Real Entertainment
The launch-leech.pl tool represents a recurring pattern for me. I derive as much — if not more — entertainment from creating programs like launch-leech.pl (and implicitly reverse engineering something in the process ; in this case, a website) as I do from the intended entertainment media itself. I seem to have this issue a lot with games, too.Is this an issue for anyone else ? Am I the only one who would rather play with the box that a shiny toy comes packaged in ?
